Sleep Dentistry

What is Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry is the treatment of patients with sleep issues through the use of custom fit dental appliances. The most common issues addressed include snoring, sleep apnea and teeth grinding.

Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea

A CPAP(continuous positive airway pressure) machine is frequently prescribed to help alleviate snoring and sleep apnea. The purpose of a CPAP is to keep your airways open and help maintain nighttime breathing while sleeping. The machine consists of a mask that fits over your mouth at night. For some patients, it’s cumbersome and often uncomfortable.

As an alternative, Dr. Lineberry could fit you for a custom oral appliance that is worn in your mouth at night. It is similar to a night guard with a top and bottom. The appliance pulls your jaw forward to help keep your airways open cutting down on snoring and sleep apnea.

Treatment of Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding (also known as bruxism) is a very common condition among children and adults. Often times, however, it goes unnoticed until the wear of enamel is discovered during an oral exam. Regular check-ups can help in identifying bruxism. A dental appliance called a bite splint or night guard is the most common treatment for bruxism. It is worn over the teeth at night to prevent teeth grinding. Learn more about teeth grinding.

Are Sleep Dentistry Treatments Covered by Insurance?

A portion of the cost is frequently covered by dental insurance, depending on your diagnosis and specific benefits of your plan.
