Sedation Dentistry

The Purpose of Sedation Dentistry

Carolina Center for Comprehensive Dentistry provides comfortable, patient-centered dental care to all patients. The level of comfort differs for everyone. For our patients whose fear and discomfort prevents them from regular check-ups and treatments, we offer a variety of sedation options in accordance with the best practices in the dental industry. The goal of sedation is to keep you relaxed and at ease, but often times awake.

What is Sedation?

Sedation is the use of sedative medication to achieve a relaxed and easy state. At our office we provide oral sedation dentistry, or the use of oral sedative medications, to create a comfortable experience so that you can receive the treatments you need without fear or anxiety. This technique is easy and needle-free, and you will leave our office with little or no memory of your treatment.

What Happens if I Choose Sedation?

If you opt for sedation dentistry treatments, we will prescribe an oral (pill) sedative that you take one hour before your appointment. The pill will put you in a state of conscious sedation. You will need to have a driver to escort you to and from your appointment, because this medication will make you very drowsy.

A state of conscious sedation means that you will maintain consciousness during your treatment. You will be in a state of conscious sedation for safety and cooperation during your treatments. While sedation will usually raise your pain threshold many treatments will still require local anesthesia injections to block pain. However, in your sedated state, the injection will not bother you, and you probably won’t remember it.
